Religious Education

At Harris Primary Academy Purley Way, we believe that Religious Education is important to ensure that children fully understand the major world religions and as a result the beliefs of different individuals. Furthermore, RE is intrinsic in ensuring a culture of mutual respect and tolerance in the diverse society in which we live, as a result strengthening community cohesion. Religious Education covers challenging questions and provokes children to consider their own beliefs (whether they are religious or non-religious).

The programme of study used is planned in Croydon’s Locally Agreed Syllabus where the six major world religions are studied and investigated through the areas of study of authority and worship, sacred and inspirational writings, lifestyle and celebrations and challenge units. Throughout the curriculum, other religions and world beliefs and those of the academy’s local community may also be studied using the challenge units.
