Aims and Ethos
Our Academy's ethos is that 'All children have the right to be safe, happy and respected so that they enjoy their learning and reach their full potential'. It is our job as educators to ensure the right environment, opportunities and resources are available to enable this to happen. Showing Respect, Taking Responsibility and Making the Right Choices are the 'Golden Rules' which are instilled into our pupils as they become confident, resilient and caring citizens.
When children begin their education, we ensure their first school years are enjoyable and we aim to implant a lifelong enthusiasm for learning in every pupil. We lay the foundations for a successful academic career, which involves the development of the core skills of reading, writing and maths from the outset.
Children learn and develop in their own way and our staff are committed to supporting and challenging all of the pupils in our care. To ensure that every pupil makes excellent progress, we deliver lessons that engage children’s natural sense of curiosity. This approach to teaching and learning is communicated in all areas of the National Curriculum.
Every child is encouraged to stretch themselves and become the best that they can be. Our teachers have high expectations for all pupils and deliver lessons which extend every child according to their ability. We step in quickly when intervention is needed for any pupil. This might involve one-to-one or group support for pupils who are having difficulties and for others it could mean stretching them to keep them motivated.
At Harris Primary Academy Purley Way, we encourage children to constantly strive for excellence academically, socially and personally. We embed the phrase that children should ‘REACH for the stars’. We use REACH as an acronym to teach our school values:
Resilience Empathy Achievement Courage Honesty
Each day children reflect on their day and communicate how they have displayed one or more of the school values. Teachers observe children demonstrating these values and reward them in a weekly celebration assembly. Certificates are awarded and photos are taken and displayed in the main Reception area for the whole school to celebrate their achievements.
We want the Academy to feel friendly and welcoming and always make sure that every pupil has a friend. Our children are taught to respect each other and their teachers.
There is a zero tolerance approach to any type of bullying.
